Ultrasound Probes
Since ultrasound probes cannot be easily sterilized,
ultrasound probes have to be wrapped or covered to protect patients from contamination.
Ultrasound probes are therefor sheathed in a dipped polymer material or thin polymer foil.
When you insert something into a bag, inevitably there are air pockets or bubbles. Air is a bad ultrasound conductor and has to be eliminated from probe covers. To avoid bubbles, it is necessary to partially fill covers for ultrasound probes with ultrasound conducting gel. This ultrasound gel conducts ultrasound between ultrasound probes and their covers. Ultrasound gel is also applied outside of the sheath for similar reasons.
Many ultrasound probe covers are available and can be made of tubular sheaths of plastic, laytex, or other polymer material, and even thin polymer foil. Some ultrasound probes covers are pre-gelled, and others have to be filled with gel prior to use.
Thin polymer foil ultrasound probe covers are cut to appropriate shape and heat sealed at the edges to form a tube with a closed end and an open end. These often fit badly on ultrasound probes, and ears and other sharp or abrasive protrusions of polymer foil material at the closed end portion of the cover are irritants, and may even damage sensitive mucosa in the body cavities into which the ultrasound probes are inserted.
Ultrasound probes covered in laytex can be allergenic.
