Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy FNAB

Fine needle aspiration, FNA, is a needle biopsy procedure for diagnostic cytology or tissue investigation, also known as fine needle aspiration biopsy FNAB, fine needle aspiration cytology FNAC, needle aspiration biopsy NAB, or just needle biopsy.

Needle Biopsy Procedure

In the needle biopsy FNA procedure, a hollow needle that is thinner than a normal syringe is inserted to extract cells for analysis. This technique is a very safe, minor surgical procedure to avoid a major surgical biopsy. Since the needle is thinner than a normal syringe, fine needle aspiration can be performed with or without anesthetic. In fact the local anesthetic needle will be felt as much or more than the biopsy one.

These biopsy needles are very small so aiming the needle into the problematic cells can be tricky, and the problem could be missed and give a false negative result. There is also a risk that the very few cells taken will not enable a definitive diagnosis. To help aim the needle biopsy, Ultrasound Guided FNA is popular.

Passing an ultrasound probe over the skin can visualize the location inside the body. Ultrasound shows the problem area and the biopsy needle, so sampling the correct area is easier.
